Watercolor and Pastels

Discover the limitless possibilities of the wonderful world of watercolors and pastels. Frequent demonstrations will enhance your knowledge of the mediums and advance your level of comfort by studying various materials, composition, techniques, and useful tips as they relate to your individual projects.

Multi-Level Printmaking
Instructor: Paula Campbell
Ink on paper: Few things are more beautiful or mysterious! And of all the ways to put ink on paper, etching is perhaps the most tactile and satisfying. In this class you will explore intaglio techniques such as etching and aquatint using zinc or copper plates, as well as relief processes on linoleum or wood. Discover the joys of printing and learn skills both modern and antique. Make prints look luscious on an assortment of papers. Students of all levels are welcome. Come create, learn, discuss and have some fun. Lab time included!

Multi-Level Abstract Painting Studio

This studio class introduces you to creative processes and methods designed to answer your questions about abstraction, while enjoying the practice of personal expression. These skills enrich creativity and bring a new sense of organization to your paintings. Students are guided and encouraged to evolve through investigation of their own work, giving you the confidence to develop an exciting and cohesive body of work. Essentials of Painting and Building a Good Composition
Instructor: Lisa DePinto
Whether you want to continue to paint with instruction and encouragement or would like to start and complete assignments with an instructor and other artists, this is the place for you! Some ideas of where to begin will be discussed, including painting the interiors around you, discovering their beauty: your kitchen sink, what's outside your back door, or maybe putting together a few knick-knacks to create a still life that has a special meaning. Composing a painting from photos is always an option too. We will walk through the challenges together and continue to make art in the beautiful North Shore Art League painting studio. Classes will include demos, a sharing of each other’s work as well the work of contemporary artists and old masters.

Independent Painting

Work on the painting project of your choice and be guided and encouraged by an experienced artist. John Fleck is a seasoned painter, comfortable with oil, acrylic, gouache, pastel, and a variety of drawing media. Figurative/Portrait Drawing

Here’s your chance for an evening figurative class! Figurative work is the most challenging and stimulating form of drawing – a great addition to any art portfolio! In this class you will learn to draw the human form from direct observation, beginning with short and working to longer poses, exploring line, tonal value, proportions, personal expression, and perspective...all essential to seeing and translating the figure as a whole. All levels of experience are welcome as well as all mediums. Class will include preparation and demonstration. Students are also welcome who wish to transition from drawing to painting, looking for a starting point to painting or just looking to delve deeper into painting…encouraged to work on individual projects with instruction provided. “En Plein Air – There is no better way to learn about color, value and light than to paint from life, “en plein air”. This workshop will benefit ALL of your painting as well. You will learn to observe and make decisions in a timely manner. As we edit nature, we decide what to emphasize and what to leave out. Painting with fellow artists is an opportunity to grow, learn, and be inspired by others and the world around us. We’ll meet in the North Shore Art League studio and plan our days! Capturing Water in Watercolor

The wonderful subject of water! Amazing to paint and a plentiful subject. The miracle of light bouncing off waves, raindrops glistening as they gently drop, and the clear views of the beach floor through this natural resource – learn how to capture it on paper! We’ll start by learning to sketch our subject - then, Fran will demonstrate and teach how to mix colors and “let your brush do the work” to build your skills. Image to Abstract I– Three Day Workshop
Instructor: Noted artist Mark Daniel Nelson
This workshop is for the painter ready to push his or her work beyond the point of recognizable subject matter into the realm of pure abstraction. Students will start with traditional representational approaches and move through progressively more abstract techniques until arriving at purely non-objective paintings. Special attention will be paid to the elements of composition as they apply to abstract painting. Through a combination of slideshows, discussions, assignments and critiques, this workshop will expose students to new artistic possibilities for self-expression. Students should bring their own reference photos and also plan to take photos during the workshop. Printed photos and/or digital images on laptop/iPad may be used for reference. Photo editing software is also helpful but not required. Students will have the option to paint from a still life set up. A payment of $250 will hold your space in this workshop. Remainder of tuition due 10/15. Limited to 14 students!

What subject matter or abstraction calls for a large format to make an impactful statement? You will learn - working on one large painting evolving over 3 weeks. In the first week you will sketch and develop an idea in color. Emphasis will be put on designing your painting. For weeks 2 and 3, you will paint and finish your project with instruction, helpful critiques, composition guidance and a whole new perspective on size! Supplies: All media welcomed. The Path to Painting Success (Offering two - 5 week sessions!)

Open to all levels, we will explore painting techniques from classical masterworks and also learn about more contemporary methods, providing fundamentals that will help each student gravitate to their own personal painting style. This class will empower students to make creative decisions that will launch or refine the development of a unique artistic vision. Students will learn about the essentials of the picture-making process including: composition and design, value structure, color harmony, and paint application. Underpainting Techniques & Mixed Media Painting

This class will explore a variety of materials and mediums and will assist students in discovering their instinctive creative self. You will learn different underpainting techniques that can be combined with encaustic or soft pastel. The supply list covers a wide range of materials and students can pick and choose their preferences during each class.

Our wonderful studio space is occasionally open exclusively to members on Sunday afternoons! We encourage members to use our beautiful painting studio to work on their art on these Sundays when it is not reserved for classes or workshops. If you're not a member, this is another great reason to join! The space is open and monitored from 1:00 - 4:00pm.
A one-time use is $15, while a 5-time use is $50.
